Suitcase Table

I've had this idea floating around in my head for a long time.  I saw a suitcase made into a table somewhere and put it on my long...."Someday I have to try this list"...Yep, now I can check it off!

I found this suitcase for $1 and the table for $5 so this project had a grand total investment of $6

I never buy legs, I always look for an inexpensive table and take the legs off.  I really liked these legs since they were attached to a board and I thought it would give the suitcase good stability.  Of course you could attach any legs.

I screwed the legs onto the bottom of the suitcase using a washer on the inside of the suitcase so the screws wouldn't pull through.

Ok, on to the inside.....Houston we have a problem....This is what you get for a $1

But the lining came out easily, then I washed it with bleach and sanded the inside.   The inside of old suitcases are lined with a thin wood that could be stained, but I had another plan

I used the ribbon from the suitcase used for securing clothes as the hinges to keep the suitcase open.  They were glued in place with E6000 and clamped overnight.

Now, let the fun begin!

I took old book pages and ran them through my printer, I used graphics from my personal stash and some from Graphics Fairy

I Mod Podged these sheets inside the suitcase and then sprayed Walnut Ink to give them a more distressed look

Yep, open or closed, in the right setting it would be a great bedside or coffee table.  I can see it being used to store reading material and remote controls

So, what am I going to do with this????

I am going to use this at the rehearsal dinner, you see my son is getting married Thanksgiving weekend and the Mama of the groom.....Me..... is responsible for the rehearsal dinner.  This dinner will be vintaged themed like the wedding...Yea!

Shoot,....... I can't tell you exactly what I am going to use it for because only 3 people in my real life read my blog and two of those are my Son and future DIL and I want some elements of the dinner and decor to be a surprise.

I promise I will show you pictures of how I used it after the rehearsal dinner....A cliff hanger for sure LOL!

Happy Creating!

  1. What a cute idea! You really transformed the inside. I would like this for a base to a suitcase stack.

  2. Thanks for this! I collect old suitcases and would never dream of putting holes in most of them, but I do have a particularly large one that would be perfect for a project like this..great stuff!

  3. Now how cute is that!! When I read how much you paid for it, I thought...are you kidding me? Now I know why. That interior was a little nasty, wasn't it? But no more! Great project Carol.

  18. Okay, you did a great job making this table, so now for ideas what to do with it. You could leave it closed and put cheaply framed pictures of the bride and groom at different stages of their lives, maybe even put an old toy that you have in a closet somewhere on it. Or, you could open it, and fill it with cards that you give to each guest, make sure you have pens and envelopes. Give this card/envelope/pen to every married person, and ask them to write a note to the bride and groom, wishing them well, telling them a funny story on how to handle stress in marriage, etc. Good luck Blessings Paula

Now aren't you the clever one. I love your little suitcase table and adding the decoupage pages makes it look great. After you use it for the wedding you can put it in your booth and sell it!!!

  28. Just fantastic! Love how you finished up the inside too! I was the "mother of the groom" last August and did a lot of the decorations for the reception as well as rehearsal. It was a book-themed wedding but everything was also vintage so email if you want any suggestions or ideas!

  29. Oh my goodness--I love that! I made one of these once too--but I took a vintage suitcase stand (is that what they are called) and just put the suitcase on top. It was great. I posted my basket remake with the water slide decal:)

  35. Hi Carol, I just love this and you did a fabulous job with it. Gotta love those vintage legs too. I have seen this, but like you said, I have got to try it one day. You have inspired me to do so. I have a large case now but it is one of those on a slant so for a table it would not be level. I have tons of train cases, but they would be too small. I even have the legs already.
Thank you for sharing your creation and the steps. You are one talented gal!!!
    Have a great weekend.
    Hugs, Celestina Marie

I love the idea about table legs. I will have to share that with my daughter. She took an old suitcase and made two cat beds from them. I am looking at one of them right now. I will take pictures and you will see them soon.

I just picked up two of those retro tables...wondered what I would do with them! Yay!
