Gesso and Paint Finish

I just had to try using gesso and paint

I follow Rosemary's blog Villabarnes and she has perfected the art of old world finishes using gesso

I painted this previously gold frame with slate blue by rust-oleum, followed by a good thick coat of gesso

Then used a rag to wipe some of the gesso back off.  Gesso is found in the art department of any craft store

I love that it is perfectly imperfect!

These two wall sconces were next

Until the two became one......I dropped the other one on the garage floor and it broke...poop!

Rosemary has tons of variations on her blog using different colored paints and gesso

I definitely will use this method again!

These will be going to the "Fancy Flea" in April

How'd I do Rosemary???

Only 5 days until the dress form ball!!!
Happy Creating!
Carol

  4. Gorgeous Carol. Rosemary is truly the queen of Gesso. She needs to patent her name or something, because she has it down.

  9. Hi Carol,
Great job. Love your new treasures and I am a great fan of gesso since I first used it many years ago.
Also loved your dry brushing. I use this technique all the time in my painting. Love it for leaves and highlights too.

See you Tuesday at the party.

  20. I read her blog a swell and have been wanting to try it. I just love her stuff! Your pieces turned out great. Too bad about the sconce. I bought some glassware at Goodwill a couple months ago and dropped it in the parking lot before I even made it to the car! Have a great weekend!

  26. LOL..I loved the droppage/"poop"! I have used gesso quite awhile. I had an incident in our former rental house with a new 1/2 gallon pail. I was going to tamp the lid on with my foot and the plastic lid buckled and folded into the pail ..with my foot..sending an ensuing gesso volcano spewing all over my rental carpet and dining room table. I got it out of the carpet with gallons of immediate water and a steam cleaner, but you can still see gesso all over the underneath of my table. Every time I use it I think of that! Sooo.moral of the story..never close a plastic pail lid with your foot!

Humidity! Ha, I have a simmer pot of cinnamon sticks on the stove, we are in opposite corners aren't we! :-)

  33. I broke a gorgeous hazy Frenchy style etched mirror the other day....I was so good...I didn't even fuss....just cleaned it up and went on with other stuff. It was so pretty though. I was having a hard time deciding whether to keep it or sell it. I was early to your party but I wanted to include Pink Saturday in that post too. :)I bet you will have a gazillion attendees. Are we linking up Monday night or Tuesday morning? Happy Weekend. xo

  37. These pieces turned out great, Carol! I won one of Rosemary's giveaways and I thought you had won one too! : ) I love those sconces and it's funny because I was just thinking this morning that I really need something in between my master dresser mirror and some pictures I hung. Sconces would be perfect and here I see yours. Too bad the one broke, but I see you are using the other very creatively.

I've loved looking back through your posts and I am now your newest follower! : )

  43. I visited Michael's, Lowe's and Ace Hardware and had no luck finding the Slate Blue color of Rust-oleum. Will have to keep looking, but wondered if you found yours in a hardware store or a craft store. Love this technique and I have a lot of things I would love to try this on. Thanks!
