Painting A Union Jack..... The Real Story

OK, so here's the deal, some projects are so fun I can't wait to do them again and some projects.........Well, lets just say this is the last Union Jack Project you will see here!


I found this cute little stool at an estate sale and it was already blue and you can see the red peaking through.  I bought it the same weekend as the Queens Jubilee, so I was all into the Union Jack


Ok, so here is the problem, I, like many of you thought the Union Jack was just a cross with an X through it.......NO, there is some slight nuances with the X that make it difficult and tedious to paint

Now, look close at the X, the red line is not centered in the white

Pretty funny, I thought every Union Jack I saw painted on blogs had messed up LOL!


Oh and this will take you a roll of painters tape...Tape, paint, wait,  tape, paint, wait, repeat ZZZZZ.   


I sanded and waxed it to bring out the undercoat of red paint then put it in my booth at Orange Tree for $28

To my UK Friends, I love you, and I love the Union Jack.....I just don't loooooove painting it!

    Carol,
    How funny, I have that same stool...a friend gave it to me about 30 years ago. It has been thru a lot of painting thru the years (I mean, we have used it to paint lots and lots of rooms). I would put more than $28 on it...try around $42.

    I never knew that about the nuances in the cross piece. I probably would have just la dee dah painted and messed it up. I guarantee that will sell quickly. It's really cute!

    Ummmm...sounds like some of the people I have worked with in the past...when you ask them what they are doing cuz it seems like they are sitting around waiting for paint to dry! BUT--that was worth waiting for because it is very, very cute- xo Diana

    This is such a great stool and so unlike anything you've done before! It turned out wonderfully, even though it drove you nuts. I never realized that about the Union Jack before you said it.

    OMG! I never noticed the offset stripes. I knew the criss cross under the cross would require some skill but oh my. I don't blame you, been there, done that.

    I really, really appreciate that you took the time to get it right! Actually, if it's not being a flag and not flying, I think it's probably ok. There's versions of the Stars and Stripes that don't have all of the stars and stripes, right?

    It's a lovely little stool and you're selling it at a bargain price, for all the love and work you put into it!

    I'm glad that you pointed that out. I would have painted it all wrong. If I ever do one. Heather just paints everything FREE HAND! The girl is crazy good. Me.....not even close. I think I would have kept it for the price you sold it for. It was CUTE!

    I too thought it was an "X" until I did one. Even using a stencil, this is tricky to keep the colors right. The end product was beautiful!
