Blog Reading list Is NOT Going Away, Just Blog Reader

Maybe you already knew this, I ignored it as long as I could, but when I heard blog reader was going away in July and it was now June, I thought it was time to check it out.

It just did not make sense to me that Google Friends Connect was staying, but Google reader was going away...Lets think about this, why would you have a button to connect and read a blog and then no way to read the blog you connected to....I just knew something wasn't right!  So, I spent an evening trying to figuring this out.  Here is what I discovered

Blog reader is going away, not Blogger reading list.  So, whats the difference?

Blog reader is an RSS feed  (Don't ask me what that is), just know it is a way some people follow blogs.

Blogger reading list is the blog roll in our dashboard, I think it is how most of us follow the blogs that we have connected to with Google friends connect. This is not going away!

I found this information from many sources, but the best explanation was from Nathan, if you would like to read more.

So there you go, nothing is going to change for most of us.  Will it in the future, maybe, but I'm not going to spend my time worrying about what might happen.  I know I could use Bloglovin, Google +, Linky, etc. etc.  I will cross that bridge when I have to, or maybe I won't.  I blog because it's fun, but if it gets to complicated I might rethink how much fun it is.

So, in the words of Scarlett O' Hara......"I can't think about that right now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow"

Happy Creating!
Carol

  1. Google reader is a separate feature to read the blogs you follow. Don't you worry about it. I signed into Bloglovin and I really love it. You can transfer all of your blogs into Bloglovin and keep on reading them. Bloglovin will ask you to do so if you like when you create an account. So, I am reading your blog in Bloglovin...

It also seems that everytime something is "improved" it ends up being a big headache. Like yahoo and their "improvements", I now call them YahBOOOOOO.
thank you for the explanation, not sure I understood it but I AM reassured LOL (())

  6. I really dislike changes! LOL thanks for the update. I don't use the list but, I guess I will start. I did end up joining Bloglovin' and really like it a lot. That surprised me.

  9. I think there was a lot of misinformation to start with on this--it was making me crazy too. I set up the google + and I HATED it, so I went back to the old format. I have a personal and business blog so those who don't follow one or the other it was confusing.

  12. Hey Gal! Thanks for taking the mystery out of it all!! I use the reader when I am pressed for time, but don't really NEED it!

    Have a fab week!

  13. Oh- This whole thing just gives me a headache. WHY can't they leave well enough alone and not change things that seem to work quite well as they are? Thanks, Carol. I guess I will just keep bumbling along as I do now- xo Diana

  14. I take all this very personally, because I'm tech-challenged, I think they do it just to make me look like an idiot..and they succeed....

  15. I don't know what everything means or how it works but I don't like change once I learn how to do something! Enjoy your blog. Don't want to lose it. Nancy

  16. Hey, Carol! I was ignoring this too, was just going to wait and see what happened. Thank you so much for looking into it and taking the time to post about it! I really appreciate it. P.S. I LOVE Gone with the wind!! ~ Jamie

  17. Hey Carol! Another way to get the posts is the subscribe to a blog via e-mail. It would benefit you to remind your readers that reading a blog post via e-mail doesn't count as a view unless they click the link and read it via your blog. Kitty

  18. Thanks for following up on this and sharing the information. I've wondered about that also but I'm not as tech-savvy as I should be. I really need to learn more!
    Have a great week!

In the internet I'm like a Scout - when lost seat and wait to be found ahahahah
Because everyone enters the whirlwind and panic announcing the doom of something and sooner or later you find out that it might not happen, happen diferently or not such a big deal.
I'd walk through hot coals to find you. So glad Blogger reading list is walking along with me ;)

Wishing you a wonderful week, Sweet Face!

  22. I never did like Google Reader and used the Reading List instead. But I had another blogging friend try Bloglovin' a while ago and she recommended it. I gave it a try and I instantly loved it! So I'm on the Bloglovin' bus now, LOL, and it's keeping me very organized.

  23. Thank you for explaining this, Carol. While I consider myself somewhat tech literate, it's come to the point that I'm not jumping on every new bandwagon. It's too much. I don't text, tweet or "god forbid, pinterest" and still manage to live. I do have a mac which has a iphoto program that is fabulous. I do appreciate the info from Heart Vintage Design above about linking to count it as a view. I subscribe to my favorites by email and certainly want to help my pals with the view count.

  24. Once again, you are so helpful! I have been avoding this very thing because it hurts my head. I guess I will still be able to post/read in July. Like you, I will cross that bridge. BTW, I posted Prom pics on my blog :) Oh and thanks so much for all the button info you sent me!! xo

  26. I agree. Not even gonna worry about it until I have to. I totally look just like Scarlett Ohara while I'm laying here with pneumonia! (NOT) haha Have a great week!

  28. I subscribe to my favorite blogs via email because I have no idea what a reader is, how to use one and whats the advatage over email? I would appreciateany insight on it!! THANKS, Jo Ann

  29. I'm right in synch w/ Jo Ann. I subscribe via email. In my case, it's because it's the only thing on offer that i understand. Readers? Never did get the hang of those. Tried Bloglovin the other day and got nowhere. Makes no sense to me.

I'm so glad I'm not the only tech dumb person at this furniture painting/shabby loving/fun crafting party. At least my fingers can figure out where to land on the keys for emails. No telling what a mess I would make if i tried to hit the keys to get a reader working. The whole laptop might blow up.

But let me tell you about the $30 dog-knawed white painted four drawer dresser I got from SA store that I've turned into a macho man's polished graphite case with white drawer fronts slightly shabbied and with hardware store basic pulls OMG! Who needs blog readers and all that techie stuff.

Quick, get the brushes out of the freezer and lets start on the next piece at hand in the pile in the corner of the garage. Paint, wax, buffer.....those i understand.

  30. WHAT??!!!
I'll just wait and see what happens! You KNOW that I don't like these changes and have the hardest time with them! Oh well!
Hubby's first day was fine. He was in the "office" learning. Tomorrow there is road training!
    Good news, NO PAY CUT!!!
    Warmly,

  33. What a relief! I'm so glad you chose to share your research. I'm a great one for ignoring until absolutely necessary. Life is so short, so busy and so complicated, how else is one supposed to survive!

  42. Thanks for this. Like you, I had decided not to panic, because I read with the Blogger reading list. But with July so close, the news really was trying to make me panic. Maybe I should worry more about my readers who are not bloggers? That seems to be the message I'm getting...
