This little vintage side table was a great find, it just needed a little love!
I looks like it was handcrafted.
I added a ring of plaster flowers to the little door. You can make the flowers in your own clay mold..Tutorial HERE. Or you can make flowers in gum paste molds...Tutorial HERE. I made a chalk outline of a plate, then "glued" the flowers down with vinyl spackle.
To make the flowers look like they were actually a part of the original piece, I filled in between the spaces with vinyl spackle......NOW, it looks like a hot mess, but stick with me......
You don't need a cake decorating tube, you could put spackle in paper you shape into a cone, snip the tip off and pipe on the spackle.
I used a couple coats of homemade chalk paint, globbing a lot of paint over the flowers. Then finished with a coat of clear Minwax, followed by dark wax.
Now I think the flowers look original to the piece.
Have you ever noticed how big the old magazines were compared to the magazines we have now?
This is going in my booth at Orange Tree Antiques...I usually tell you a price, I'm really wavering on this one.....Maybe $55-$65?
I wanted to thank you again for taking a couple minutes out of your day to read my ramblings. I love what I do, but sharing it with like minded people sure makes it more fun!
Happy Creating!
I think that would be a great price- A good buy for the customer and I hope you make a decent amount on it. That is just a darling piece-the flower wreath really added a lot to it. xo Diana

ReplyDeleteI love popping by and seeing all your clever makeovers! Beautiful job! I'm gonna pin it because one day I'm gonna have to try it too! And that mug on top is a beauty too:-)
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Bella
Love what you did with this piece! Love the idea of the circle of flowers. I must try this!
ReplyDeleteNever the "from rags to riches" suited a piece better.
ReplyDeleteTurned out lovely... I so wish my husband picked something I saw in the side street this morning... then I'll be needing you...
News and a request for your expertise help, if he did ;)
Love,
Teresa
That price would make it sell quickly, that's for sure. It's just perfect with the flowers. (I keep planning to copy cat your plaster projects and have yet to do it. I'm on that road to you-know-where paved by my good intentions, I guess.)
ReplyDeleteAnd I had not noticed that about magazines! By gum, you are right.
What a great table, Carol! I love how you made it over. It is really very multi-functional with the shelves, the little door and the magazine holder.
ReplyDeleteLove it
ReplyDeletegreat job girl
It is really cute and I am sure someone will snap it right up
Another fine creation Carol ~ I never heard of the vinyl spackle and this is just another reason I enjoy your posts ~ One of these days I'm going to try making the flowers ~ Thanks for the reminder and links to your tutorials :) Judi
ReplyDeletewow! what an AMAZING transformation! (could kick myself now for not grabbing that curbside table i saw just yesterday!)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute piece! I really love the flowers on it. I bought the spackle when you posted the tutorial, but I have not had the nerve to try it - seeing this piece gives me the inspiration to give it a go. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Carol, Just an awesome piece and you gave it new life. Love it.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend,
Hugs~
Great makeover again, Carol! I think for that price it will sell fast.
ReplyDeleteGreat transformation! I love the roses. Isn't it amazing how a little paint, spackle, a lot of imagination and some love can make such a difference.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who doesn't want to pay $65.00 wouldn't deserve to have this cutie. It does look hand crafted. My sweet Dad used to make similar items in his workshop.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom taught me at an early age to refer to such items as you have...hand crafted. The beautiful items she turned out were to be handmade not home made. I say that is worth the extra $10.00 maybe more because it IS hand crafted.
I JUST LOVE your "handmade" roses and I still think you are one of the most talented ladies out there.
This is a lovely piece and I wish we had more neat magazine racks. I get so mad at the new magazines.Thinner, no content unless you count advertising.
Have a great weekend, Ginger
Another great tutorial!

ReplyDeleteGreat resscue! I have a cousin who is a cake decorator and have known her to pipe her own flowers and leaves for just such a project. Nice to see how it is done for those of us who don't have that skill!
ReplyDeleteAnother fabulous makeover! Love the addition of the flowers!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, and you always give me great ideas! You da best!
ReplyDeleteYou really turned that plain old cabinet into a nice piece of furniture! The flowers really do look original to the piece, now, too. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWould you come live with me for a week:)hehehe
ReplyDeleteLUV it!!
OMG Carol, this is a beautiful makeover! I used your gum paste molds tutorial to make some appliques for an old mirror and it turned out lovely too (you can see it here: http://kassandrashabby.blogspot.com/2013/07/ensueno-victoriano.html ) I deeply thank you for sharing so many clever techinques, you are a great inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI would easily pay $65 for this sweet little cabinet. Your vision is excellent when it comes to sad little orphans you find. You transform them into "Belles of the Ball"...ala Cinderella! Happy Creative Heart Dear...

ReplyDeleteYou saved it! It really didn't look like anything special in the beginning. But, now....wow! It's really cool! I love how it has so much...a cupboard, shelves, a magazine holder... Very nice!
ReplyDeleteOh Carol, this is probably one of my favorites pieces you've done. I love how versatile the table is & how accommodating for your needs. Well done! Hugs. Tammy

ReplyDeleteYou never cease to amaze me with what you can do to something that was purely ugly before you got your hands on it. I doubt if I would have given this a second look. If I lived near by I'd be in your shop several times a week!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat makeover. Amazing transformation of a not so great piece to a nice accent piece. You have great talent and vision. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI like this a lot. Great job, good price range too. I love your ideas with the spackle and molds.

What a neat little side table. LOVE how that turned out Carol.
ReplyDeleteCarol - how drop dead cute is this??? So talented...and makes me want to do this!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is just too cute...def. looks original to the piece. You have inspired me to make "trim" with gum paste molds and I love it. You are the best!!!
ReplyDeleteThe rose garland is really pretty and before I read the how-to, I thought you'd cast the roses all in one circular piece. Yes, they look convincing as part of the original. Lovely piece, Carol.
ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet little table...luv what you did to it!
Blessings,
Linda
So charming! Love what you do with not so attractive pieces. You make them beautiful again! Mimi
ReplyDeletethat table is charming Carol and the extra care and time you took with the hand crafted roses really makes it so special. Perfect for a bedside table...with a magazine rack to boot! xo

I think $75-$95 would be a fairer price...this is a wonderful piece!! LOVE the ring of roses. You are so talented!!
ReplyDeleteThat lovely flower ring takes this piece from kind of mannish to light and feminine. Love it! I will try making those flowers some day.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing change - it doesn't even look like the same piece.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how pretty you made that old thing look! That's what you do~~
ReplyDeletethis is so charming now, carol! love the circle of roses--that just makes the piece! LOVE the drawers below, too!
ReplyDeleteIt always amazes me how you can see the potential in crap, ha! Beautiful change up as always!
