I was just driving down the street by my house and there sitting next to a garbage can was a wooden bird cage
Screech....U turn.... I always get a little embarrassed picking up other peoples trash, but It does not stop me from doing it! Especially when I see a perfectly shabby rusted bird cage.
It was in perfect condition, but since it had been used for a real bird I put on my gloves and got out the scrub brush. I love when I find something that does not need a transformation, of course I had to do Something!
So, I got out the $2.00 roll of vintage wallpaper I had previously picked up at a thrift store...
...And lined the bottom
I priced it at $32 and put it in my booth at Orange Tree Antiques. I was not surprised that it sold in a couple days, because bird cages are hot right now.
I love a good curbside find....What was your best curbside find???

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful find, Carol! I'm not amazed either that the birdcage sold so fast. One of my favorite curbside finds is an old garden table that we use on our patio for flower pots and decorations.

ReplyDeleteYeah ! Just learn a new word "curbside" ! My better curbside find was an antique wall coffee grinder in perfect use from the beginning of the 20th century it was made of wood, glass, earthenware and metal !

We live in a University town so we often find useful curb things like fans or microwaves but no vintage items.
*Sigh* What a great find! And your 'liner' was perfect! Back in the day, used to find entire housefuls of furniture on garbage day..never had to buy much..but now it's illegal to put stuff out, except one day a year, and there are sellers in big trucks waiting to pounce on anything that might make them some money..a great find, and a great redo!

Wow, lucky you! I can't believe someone was tossing this out! I love your idea of lining the bottom with the sheet music, how sweet. I'm not surprised that it sold so soon. I too am always on the hunt for cast offs. I once snatched a pair of vintage wooden water skis from someones trash, then sold them:) And just recently picked up some really neat large wooden spindles that will be a future project or two!

I'm glad I wasn't driving right behind you. We'd be having a foot race to the curb. lol I know how that is. I found a child's french provincial vanity with bench setting on the curb with other items and I Screeched to a halt. The only thing wrong was that it needed tightening up, which took two minutes. I painted it champagne pink, redid the cushion with french graphics and sold it for $100. As the saying goes, one woman's trash is another woman's treasure.

So you found a bird cage which had been a home to a Carol Birdie ;). Because it looked like a stress and worn out look you could ahieve in the time it took from picking it at the curb until finding the right paper to line it with.
I'm not surprised it sold so well. It was a sweet and lovely object and I can imagine a cat fight for that "canary" had you put it for sale among some of your blogger friends ;).
I found and convinced dear husband to pick a nightstand I hope to put my hands on soon.

ReplyDeleteIn our previous city, I found a vintage desk, tons and tons of high quality woman's clothes, numerous kitchen items, a Nordic skimaster. I used to wonder what kind of throw away society do we live in. In our current city -nothing on the curbsides.

Birdcages are so fun to use in decorating. I have one I bought - definitely did not find it on the curb.
ReplyDeleteOh you crack me up! I lost count on how many New set of brakes I have had to have done due to my creative mind! Let's see the best recent Treasure was I called Nick to pick up this Pretty headboard I saw(No room in my SUV) so he did but what I didn't see was the Wall cabinet holding it up. Which is now hanging on the wall in the Garage containing my shipping supplies. Still don't know what to do with the Headboard...any ideas? Your package is going out this week, I have been sick. But up and about now~

Oh my goodness... what an adorable find! I am always hauling something from someones curb--- so embarrassing--- but you know, you do it anyway! I love that bird cage! They are selling well in Kansas too. I definitely remember my first trash find. My friend and I were driving to an estate sale and I spotted one of those old metal desk trash cans with tole flowers. I popped out and grabbed it as we giggled. I jumped back in and we drove off congratulating ourselves until I looked down and hundreds of ants were pouring out all over me and her car. Note to self: wear gloves, and check inside before you grab it.
