How To Sew A Picnic Basket Liner

I finally found a vintage picnic basket to redo

Here is what I started with

My total inspiration was this vintage plastic flannel lined table cloth I have been holding onto for years.....Got to use the good stuff before the kids sell it for a quarter at my estate sale!

This blue ocean breeze paint was WAY to bright, so I toned it down with a light sanding and walnut gel stain

Now it's time to line the basket.  I've never lined a basket before, so I just winged it.   I put the basket on the fabric and drew around the bottom adding about an inch
Then I measured around the top circumference of the basket

After measuring the the width and height I added 1 1/2" to each measurement and cut the fabric in half.  I decided to use 2 pieces to line the basket because the fabric would have to be sewn at an angle..Smaller to larger on the top, you could use one continuous piece though

Here is is the lining pinned

Before I sewed them together I add pockets for silverware and napkins

Then I took the three pieces of fabric, turned them inside out, and pinned them together right in the basket, insuring a good fit......Then sewed them all together

It turned out pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.

Since I used a plastic tablecloth to line it, I hot glued it in around the top.  If I used fabric I would have put velcro around the top so it could be taken out and washed

The finishing touch was a graphic from Graphics Fairy and the "Blender Pen" transfer method.  Graphics Fairy has a page HERE of every transfer method possible, including the blender method...A great page to book mark

I love to try everything once, but many times a project is so difficult I don't do it again, but I would definitely do this again, it was sooooo fun!

I am going to put it in my booth at Orange Tree and price it at $45.....If it doesn't sell...Well....It's mine!

Happy Creating!

  1. The heck with seeing if it doesn't sell, Carol, I would have kept that baby! : ) Great job and I love the use of the vinyl tablecloth. I just saw some {new} picnic baskets at Christmas Tree Shop and they always have some pretty vinyl tablecloths. Of course the baskets are not as pretty as this one, but I guess you could dress them up. Love the pockets you added. Makes it so convenient to carry those extra essentials safely.

  2. You did a great job! I have always wanted to have a booth with Janae--but my problem is I would never want to sell anything. This would be a keeper for me!

  5. I love it! I love the idea of the flannel backed vinyl, too. You can just wipe it clean. I have a picnic basket that was a wedding gift. It's not shaped like that kind (I love that kind...) but it still could use a face lift.

(BTW... I have to tell you that my mom and sister and I laughed at your comment about two months of Christmas mantels. We agree! Guess the lightning will strike three more times.)

  9. Great job, Carol. I alway want to use oil cloth but it's so expensive so the flannel backed tablecloth is a great idea.
You really should write a book with all your "how to's". I know I'd buy it.

  20. NICE!! I think you should keep it. And I had to laugh at your comment about the kids selling the tablecloth for 25 cents! My "good stuff" may just end up in a dumpster! Sarah isn't nearly fond enough of my stuff!!♥♫

  22. Carol, I am so late on all my replies. I want to thank you for visiting me under my shade tree. I hope you will someday come to Savannah and we can sit together.

I love your picnic basket, you are always making things look current again. I have a nice basket on top of the laundry room cabinets. I really should do something with it. Oh well, Another project for my "Carol's inspirations" list.
    Have a great week, Ginger

  23. This one will sell for sure (sorry?lol). Love the new Frenchified look! I admire your ability to just wing it. I recently bought a wire waste paper basket for the bathroom. Same idea, larger on top, smaller on the bottom. I bought beautiful ticking fabric and tried to make a template/pattern.....but once I cut the fabric it turned out not to fit right at all! I never even got to the sewing phase! It was such a bummer I haven't been back to it for a while. Maybe I should try again!

  24. Carol,

I am crazy for these baskets! I have done two (one in french lilac and one in a pretty blue) with Graphics Fairy transfers on top. I cannot bear to part with them and keep meaning to post them on her Brag Monday...

I too would definitely buy a book of all of your tutorials! I think it would fly off the shelves like everything else you do :)

  25. Ahh another success project. Your use of the vinyl tablecloth is genius for spills. The addition of pockets brilliant for organizing and not jumbling items. I love a good picnic basket and this one with the flat top is prime. I love to give a picnic basket or wine backpack as wedding gifts since they are never duplicated and I find picnics very romantic. Fabulous job my dear...

  28. Oh Carol! Very, very cute! I have about a dozen picnic baskets that I've picked up for nearly nothing and haven't done anything with them. I may just have to do up a few of these and put them in my booth. I love the fact that you made a vinyl liner for easy clean-up.

  45. Thank you for posting this idea, I am participating in a picnic themed blog hop and just picked up a basket, now trying to figure out how to line it, and this post was very helpful! I'm thinking of making mine reversible by not sewing the corners together, but having all the sides sewn to the bottom piece, then tie them together at the top. You'll have to check out my blog in a couple weeks and you can see what I do!
