I transformed this old barrel magazine rack a few years ago
It was pre-blogging so I don't have a "Before" picture, it was basically brown and ugly
I gave it a coat of white paint and added authentic vintage decals I found at an antique store
I'm showing this to you now because I am going to sell it in my booth. Remember the kerosene heater table I transformed.....
.....Well, I loved it so much I wanted to keep it, but I have a rule, if something comes into my little house, something has to go out to make room so........
...........Out goes the magazine rack!
I've also decided it's time to start selling all of my decorating magazines, I have boxes of them. For years I would flip through old magazines for inspiration and now with Pinterest and blogs, I'm finding all of the inspiration I need
I will never stop buying them because sitting with a cup of coffee and reading my favorite magazine is something I really enjoy
The truth is I've run out of room under the guest room bed to store them and I never go through old copies any more.
This brings me to a question, do you keep all of your old magazines, or do you find yourself turning more to Pinterest and blogs for inspiration?
Happy Creating!
Carol
That heater is so sweet! I went through all my old magazines and kept the photos and articles I wanted. Put them into organized binders. I have binders for Christmas, gardening, home decor, etc. That way I have more space and can find what I need. I do find so much inspiration from blogs and pinterest now that I don't depend on magazines as much.
ReplyDeletejust adorable Carol!!!! always amazed at what you can do!
ReplyDeleteMy late husband had the same house rule, but I admit I cheated a lot of the time! He really didn't mind what I did in the house. I found the garage to be full of tools, more tools, etc. so he apparently didn't follow his own rule!
ReplyDeleteI think you made a very good decision to keep the heater. Last summer I sorted out a pile of magazine and kept only two--Tea Time and Romantic Homes. Oh, maybe some issues of Victoria, also. But that still left a stack.♥♫
Oh I keep some mags and internet some. :) Your magazine rack is gorgeous! Then again, so is the stove! :D Girl, you rock!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
I need to follow your rules Miss Carol. It sure is cute, but I love the kerosene one better!~:)
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to hear you decided to keep the old heater, and I'm sure the sweet magazine bucket will be a huge hit in your booth. I have the same rule: if something stays, something has to go. I'm guilty of saving the same magazines...no matter how many times I read through them, I see something different.
ReplyDeleteI just go rid of six boxes of old magazines. I don't even miss them. I turn to pinterest more now and blogs of course. I love your barrel magazine holder. Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteI think it'll sell quickly in your booth. It has such a sense of nostalgia about it. My grandmother had one like it, just not cute and pinked up.
ReplyDeleteI used to save more magazines, but I am just like you in that I don't save them as much now. I have whittled mine down to a few holders full which I'll keep updated. I still have more Christmas ones that I need.
Love your heater, Carol! It is darling and a good trade for your sweet magazine stand.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you- I am slowly weeding out my magazine stash. The ones I won't part with are my issues of Romantic Home and the old Victoria ones I have- other than a few Christmas issues-I am passing them along. oh...and I am keeping some gardening ones, too. I blog more than I read magazines now- xo Diana
Oh isn't that cute... Leave it up to you to find something Creative to do with it. :)
ReplyDeleteahhh I have the same rule, something in = something out. Sadly I rarely follow it. :)
ReplyDeleteStill have many of the old Victoria's and Romantic Homes. Don't do pinterest just do not want to suck up any more of my time on the computer, I'm on here enough as it is LOL.
I sit with my magazines and pull pages out to save. I can't keep them all any more! And I look at my favorite blogs much more than my magazines now! Enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteI bet both items sell fast, they are just adorable!!
ReplyDeleteI keep some magazines, especially holiday issues, but keep inspiration binders with ideas and photos. I pass on many magazines to others, too! Thanks for stopping by, Carol!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your creative pieces! The weathered whites and vintage decals...Ahhh! They are all so very cottagey.
ReplyDeleteI love visiting your blog...You are such a wealth of charming ideas and inspiration!
Have a wonderful week, Carol!
Blessings,
Carolynn
Carol, I love the magazine tub. I have one in the attic but without the legs. I think this is a "Carol" project I can pull off. I have been wanting to do one of those "Frenchy" waterslides. Would that work on the magazine container?
ReplyDeleteI have a gazillion Colonial Homes and Traditional Homes magazines. I didn't know there was a market for them. Let me know how they sell.
Thanks for visiting my garden. I really didn't think I would fool that many people. It was fun.
Have a great week. xo Ginger
You have me laughing at this post! I've spent several days rereading and discarding massive piles of magazines. As a decorator, they where tools of the trade, but blogs and Pinterest have made them redundant. All except my stash of Victoria, that is! ~ Maureen
ReplyDeleteWell Miss Carol...I have years and years worth of decorating magazines in my downstairs bedroom closet! They are mostly Victoria, Romantic Homes and Romantic Country. I can't seem to get rid of them. They are like a security blanket to me...I'm terrible!!! Love your little bucket mag holder and your heater. Really cool!
ReplyDeleteDear Carol, I think I will establish your rule. It sounds good to me!
ReplyDeleteLove the magazine holder!!
I just keep the good magazines. There is just a sympathy for some of them and i trash the other ones or give them away.
Carol,
ReplyDeleteI really need to adopt your rule! I do like Pinterest and I get so much inspiration from blogs that now magazines are more of a splurge than a must - have. That said, there is no replacing the relaxation of paging through a beautiful magazine. I save the February issues of my favorites because I love Valentine's Day!
Sue
Love that decal! Totally guilty of buying too many magazines but I love actually relaxing and holding the real thing in my hands. Now instead of keeping them or putting them in the recycle bin I share them with friends once a month.
ReplyDeleteI keep way too many magazines, only because I don't tear out just the pages I'm interested in (one more thing to do) so I just keep the whole thing. I did start selling my MS mags on ebay since I had every one of them from the beginning of time and they sold really well. I do plan to part with more of them simply becuase of the space they take up and the fact some of them are never looked at more than once.
ReplyDeleteI think I am a magazine-aholic. :-)
You don't want to know! LOL! I have a hard time parting ways with lots of stuff. But I am getting that Princess House outta my garage and selling it! I must have 30 boxes full!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love both your magazine rack and the table. Sweet sweet sweet! Good to visit today.
Have a great week!
Hugs Anne
Hi Carol!
ReplyDeleteMagazines are such a weakness of mine! I have (several) stashes of them and it's hard to get rid of the good ones. I pull out my favorite photos/articles and organize them in a binder, with tabs to help me find just the photo I know I have in there somewhere!
Michelle
Hi Carol, love the new look! The heater is just too sweet. I like the barrel, but heater has it beat. I do not save all of my magazines. I go through them and tear out anything I might want to save. Other than my Country Gardens. I love them and refer to them often. Thinking os faving this years Romantic Homes for a while. I too love holding the real thing.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jann
I used to purchase magazines all the time...but that was before blogging. Now, seriously I don't buy them anymore because I blog all the time it feels like I'm running a magazine myself....
ReplyDeleteand yes, because there is so much online, that my creative inspiration needs are being met. There is so much talent here in blogland...and it's a lot less clutter to view digital pages online.
thanks for sharing your decorating rule....one thing comes in...so something else must leave. That's exactly what I do...it's quite liberating.
ciao bella

I'm so very impressed with your talents! The transformed heater table is fabulous!

I would love to have your creative imagination and talent for just one day! WOW!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your comment about the book!!
Have a pretty day my friend!
Kristin
I don't subscribe to any magazines anymore. I do have all my old Martha Stewart magazines. I used to live near a fabulous library and would checkout gorgeous decorating books. Now I am inspired by blogs such as yours!!
ReplyDeletei love that stove--i'd keep it too:) i don't save magazines anymore, carol. i'm like you--space challenged:)
ReplyDeleteI write the idea and page number on the cover with a sharpie and just shuffle through them. I just keep the ones that inspire me. Lately I don't seem to have time to read them thought.
ReplyDeleteYou are inspiring...not only with your crafts and makovers but with "one thing in-one thing out"...I need to do that! (you know!you've seen!)LOL!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love my old magazines and go thru them once in awhile and sell them at the booths. I haven't gotten on the pin thing! I would never leave the house if I did!
THANK YOU for the postcards! Made my day!!!
Warmly,
deb
the truth is I hardly have time to read my new magazines coming in much less the saved ones and I have stacks of shelter magazines BUT I just can't bear to throw them out. Right now one stack is my bedside table...lol
ReplyDeleteI do keep my old magazines, but only for five years.
ReplyDeleteI have a shoe rack that I repurposed as a magazine rack that sits in my upstairs sala (living area where we relax in the evenings). I change out those magazines seasonally and look through every single one of them during the two months they're on the rack. Any magazine that will have its sixth birthday will have its special pages ripped out to keep, filed in the appropriate file folder, and the rest of the carnage thrown/given away. {I offer my magazines to my little Filipino neighbor "employees" but they always decline my offer.}
I have chosen to never, ever get on Pinterest. I don't trust myself to watch the clock, being too tempted to wile away too many hours.
And as far as blogs, I purge my feed of those, too, from time to time. Not everybody holds my attention like The Polka Dot Closet does!

I just found you and will keep you forever. I have a little store on Ebay and Etsy Devine Salvage and like you we are interested in the same décor. I just found a stack of magazines yesterday and pulled them down because I thought they were Daddy's and he was bringing me a load (he is retired and has several antique booths in Dothan, AL) Well they were all of Country Living from 2007. The cover is what caught my eye on the first one and I would still make it my Master today if I were not married.
ReplyDeleteI also do a lot of Pinteresting. I still have my magazines by the bed and under though.
What brought me by was a link following ideas for my neices' wedding.
Well come by Devine Salvage on Facebook, Etsy and Ebay sometime. I love everything here so I will be back often. Cynthia
