French Vanity Stool Transformation

So whats a girl to do when a friend gives her a vanity stool...

...And she just happens to have a tulle skirt she picked up at a thrift store...

...And some fabulous new Paris script fabric......

Why....She makes herself a French tulle vanity stool

WOW, did you notice I restrained myself and did not paint the frame white!!!  The silver went so well with the grey in the fabric, that I saved myself the step of painting...Will wonders never cease!!

I bought this Paris Script fabric online from Carousel Designs it was $7.90 a yard. It's not a light cotton fabric, it's more like a denim weight, perfect for upholstery (Carousel Designs does not know I exist, I just love their fabric)

I hot glued the tulle skirt onto the seat and since it was a tad to small I had to put a little cut in the top of the waist band in the back, but covered the cut with a flower and strands of rayon ribbon

I put this little cutie in my booth at Orange Tree Antiques and priced it at $32

And it sold in 1 hour.....I hate when that happens, WAIT.... I love when that happens, but then I second guess myself......Geez, should I have priced it at $64 instead of $32?  Then I remind myself..I don't want to marry this stuff... I want to sell it!

I know I have readers that have shops, what would you have priced it at or for you shoppers out there....what would you have paid for it?

Happy Creating!

  3. Very French Chic! I certainly would have instantly paid $32 for it! This is why it is a very good thing you are on the opposite side of America from me. I would have to "marry" everything you create. I'm just saying...
Fabulous fabric and leaving the silver was brilliant...good thinking. Creative Bliss abounds with you dear...

  6. That is too cute! I was about to say it'll probably sell quickly, but wow that was fast. Good for you!

  7. LOL! I do the exact same thing when something sells so quickly...wait, should I have priced it higher? Sometimes we just need to realize that the right person found what we provided for them. Adorable vanity stool!

  8. You are so cute! It turned out darling! I'd have paid $50 for it. Beautiful finish.

  10. How beautiful, Carol! I love this! I could just see a bride or young girl sitting on this at their vanity getting ready for a big day. Love how you dealt with the cut you had to make. It just looks like part of the beauty of the stool. I think $32.00 was good. I'm cheap, so I probably wouldn't have paid more than that. : ) I got this same fabric in a red and white colorway.

I just did a post on something I'm bringing to the holiday market and I added in what I am going to price it at. I'd appreciate your opinion when you get time.

  11. Love the tulle and the paris script. What a lovely vanity stool you have created! Adore the whole thing and I definitely think the choice was rightly made not to paint! xo's Pam

  12. Dang Carol, that is so cute!!!
I love the fabric and just might have to have some of it. The tulle added the perfect touch and it's so pretty.
I would have paid $55. for it and probably would have priced it at that. You just never know. I understand what you mean when something sells that fast...you always second guess yourself. Oh well, that's the nature of the business.

  13. That stool is just adorable! I love how you fixed it up. I also love your favorite fabric store--though I haven't ordered yet. They sure have beautiful fabrics! I think the price of the stool was good--you probably could have gone like $45--but I'm sure you made someone happy and thats worth something too! :)

  14. Carol, look at fabric.com I found some wonderful Paris fabric and great script there as well.
Sadly, I would have to price it lower. Most likely 24 or 26 because I am in the middle of nowhere :)
Not surprised it sold so quickly, it is precious.

  15. It sure is pretty Carol. I am not good with pricing so I am the wrong gal to ask on this stuff. I am cheap too:) I say it looks like a high end boutique chair though, so I can see a pretty good buck.

  16. I wonder whatever happened to the stool I had back in my early, younger days? Wish I had it now! Great idea and the price must have been perfect for a buyer!♥♫

  17. What an elegant beauty! Looks bridal, or ballet. It could probably sell higher just with the tag of a bridal vanity chair. But I am a make it myself kind of gal, but may have paid 45, but I know some gals that would pay more. I think it sold and you got what you asked for, so everyone is happy. It is a wonderful idea!

  18. This is so chic...so princessesy..
so sweet in so many ways. I can see a lot of different people loving this... my granddaughter to me!!!! Ha. Price sounds good to me... but I'm always looking for a bargain. Not surprised it sold so quickly. Now I must check out that online fabric store.

  19. Nice job on the chair. Probably $45 would be a good price but does the chair swivel? I would charge more for a swivel chair. I once had a vintage golf bag - leather tooled and it sold minutes after I set it down in my booth. A man came by and snatched it. That was my record breaking sale. I believe I charged $75 for it. I too wondered if I charged enough esp when it sells that fast. Live and learn!

  23. No...I'd be thinking...gee, I should have kept that...see it really was beautiful and someone else knew it as soon as they saw it. I'd have a Carol's stuff hoarder house.

  24. Yep...$64 is the price it would have been in my booth! :)

Maybe that's why I sit on some things too long! TOO HIGH! BAH! Who KNOWS what to price things. Always a guessing game!

    Love you girl~R

  26. It is elegant, and sweet.
    Perfect combination....

I know what you mean about pricing things.
Same thing in my store. Always second guessing myself.
Some times I change the tag 3 times before it even leaves back room. =)

  27. *puts hand on chest to quiet racing heartbeat* Oh, how gorgeous!! You are just so clever and creative... it's almost too much for me to bear at times!

In my nonprofessional-making-stuff-up-off-the-top-of-my-head opinion, pricing comes down to cost of materials, labor, and what the market will bear. In the case of your utterly exquisite stool, your materials weren't overwhelmingly costly; the finished piece was fairly labor-intensive; you live in a relatively upscale area. I would have priced it at $55.

  28. Carol,

I think you obviously priced it just right. I think it helps to have a lot of turnover at the antique malls - there are a few booths I see that have all their stuff overpriced and it is there month after month - I wonder if they want to sell it or just put it up for permanent display in their booth :) BTW, could you please take pictures of your booth when you get your Christmas items in? I'll bet it looks gorgeous!

  30. The stool is so pretty. Isn't it funny how we second guess the price when it sells fast. I do it too. I think, I should have made it higher if it sold that fast, but then it might have sat a long time. Thirty two sounds good, I might have gone a little higher, $40. You can always try it again...I see those stools around estate sales. My husband says, "that's what you put it there for, to sell it." You did!

  31. That is just adorable. It's sometimes a combination of good pricing and timing! I certainly struggle with the pricing. That is really sweet...as usual from you!!

  32. I love the tulled skirt vanity, and the Paris fabric is a perfect match. I've also second guessed myself when something I put in our space goes so fast, but if you made money and are happy with it, that's all that really counts.

  35. Hi, Carol! I found a sample of your wonderful sense of style on Pinterest, and have since spent almost an entire afternoon browsing your blog. Wow! You are beautiful and creative, and I will be a faithful follower of your site. I have two of those little vanity chairs, half a dozen display cases, and now I must, must, must follow your muse and create, create, create! Thank you!

  36. It is so beautiful! The new owner must love it. I have a vanity set I have to redo, and putting a skirt on the stool will be a wonderful idea!
Thanks for the inspiration, I'm pinning for when I can get to mine.

  41. Love this pretty vanity chair and I'm not the least bit surprised it sold right away. The silver frame looks really good with the soft pink and the print in the fabric. In the right store or show around here, I wouldn't be surprised to see it priced closer to $50.

  42. Lovely transformation! I love that fabric..I couldn't part with such nice things!

  43. Carol I don't know what I would do without you! I have 2 of these vanity chairs in storage waiting for me to get inspired and so something with them- well friend you have done it once again!!! Love the stool (and your garters in the next post too!

  44. Love it. I think it would find a buyer pretty quickly priced between your price and $45. Higher than that it would sit around a while. I think you did great : )

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am shocked at how low you priced it actually Carol because you put so much time and work into things. I would have priced it at 42-45 dollars myself. I am not surprised your things go so fast. They are so cool and so inexpensive!! I too have/had? one of these chairs. It may be in storage and it sure is time to dig it out :)
