So whats a girl to do when a friend gives her a vanity stool...
...And she just happens to have a tulle skirt she picked up at a thrift store...
...And some fabulous new Paris script fabric......
Why....She makes herself a French tulle vanity stool
WOW, did you notice I restrained myself and did not paint the frame white!!! The silver went so well with the grey in the fabric, that I saved myself the step of painting...Will wonders never cease!!
I bought this Paris Script fabric online from Carousel Designs it was $7.90 a yard. It's not a light cotton fabric, it's more like a denim weight, perfect for upholstery (Carousel Designs does not know I exist, I just love their fabric)
I hot glued the tulle skirt onto the seat and since it was a tad to small I had to put a little cut in the top of the waist band in the back, but covered the cut with a flower and strands of rayon ribbon
I put this little cutie in my booth at Orange Tree Antiques and priced it at $32
And it sold in 1 hour.....I hate when that happens, WAIT.... I love when that happens, but then I second guess myself......Geez, should I have priced it at $64 instead of $32? Then I remind myself..I don't want to marry this stuff... I want to sell it!
I know I have readers that have shops, what would you have priced it at or for you shoppers out there....what would you have paid for it?

ReplyDeleteHow beautiful, Carol! I love this! I could just see a bride or young girl sitting on this at their vanity getting ready for a big day. Love how you dealt with the cut you had to make. It just looks like part of the beauty of the stool. I think $32.00 was good. I'm cheap, so I probably wouldn't have paid more than that. : ) I got this same fabric in a red and white colorway.

I would have paid $55. for it and probably would have priced it at that. You just never know. I understand what you mean when something sells that fast...you always second guess yourself. Oh well, that's the nature of the business.

That stool is just adorable! I love how you fixed it up. I also love your favorite fabric store--though I haven't ordered yet. They sure have beautiful fabrics! I think the price of the stool was good--you probably could have gone like $45--but I'm sure you made someone happy and thats worth something too! :)

It sure is pretty Carol. I am not good with pricing so I am the wrong gal to ask on this stuff. I am cheap too:) I say it looks like a high end boutique chair though, so I can see a pretty good buck.

ReplyDeleteWhat an elegant beauty! Looks bridal, or ballet. It could probably sell higher just with the tag of a bridal vanity chair. But I am a make it myself kind of gal, but may have paid 45, but I know some gals that would pay more. I think it sold and you got what you asked for, so everyone is happy. It is a wonderful idea!

Nice job on the chair. Probably $45 would be a good price but does the chair swivel? I would charge more for a swivel chair. I once had a vintage golf bag - leather tooled and it sold minutes after I set it down in my booth. A man came by and snatched it. That was my record breaking sale. I believe I charged $75 for it. I too wondered if I charged enough esp when it sells that fast. Live and learn!

ReplyDeleteIn my nonprofessional-making-stuff-up-off-the-top-of-my-head opinion, pricing comes down to cost of materials, labor, and what the market will bear. In the case of your utterly exquisite stool, your materials weren't overwhelmingly costly; the finished piece was fairly labor-intensive; you live in a relatively upscale area. I would have priced it at $55.

I think it helps to have a lot of turnover at the antique malls - there are a few booths I see that have all their stuff overpriced and it is there month after month - I wonder if they want to sell it or just put it up for permanent display in their booth :) BTW, could you please take pictures of your booth when you get your Christmas items in? I'll bet it looks gorgeous!

The stool is so pretty. Isn't it funny how we second guess the price when it sells fast. I do it too. I think, I should have made it higher if it sold that fast, but then it might have sat a long time. Thirty two sounds good, I might have gone a little higher, $40. You can always try it again...I see those stools around estate sales. My husband says, "that's what you put it there for, to sell it." You did!

ReplyDeleteLove this pretty vanity chair and I'm not the least bit surprised it sold right away. The silver frame looks really good with the soft pink and the print in the fabric. In the right store or show around here, I wouldn't be surprised to see it priced closer to $50.

ReplyDeleteI am shocked at how low you priced it actually Carol because you put so much time and work into things. I would have priced it at 42-45 dollars myself. I am not surprised your things go so fast. They are so cool and so inexpensive!! I too have/had? one of these chairs. It may be in storage and it sure is time to dig it out :)
