How to Make a Fabric Flower

Oh no, not another flower tutorial!
You asked how I made the fabric flower on my glove box, so here you have it.

I love this flower!
This is so easy!  Just cut 6 circles of fabric from large to small.

Now don't get too precise, no measuring or tracing needed, just free hand it.

Look close in the picture above, there are 6 circles, 2 are a sheer fabric.

You can use almost any thin silky fabric, I used a dress lining material and sheer fabric just be sure it is a synthetic fabric like polyester, natural silk will not work.  Lace will work also.

Here's the step that makes the flower so great  Cut slits around the outside of each circle, now don't go getting all precise.

Hold each petal above an open flame.
Do not put the fabric in the flame, it is the heat that curls it.  Now, don't go burning the house down!  I always do this by the sink.  Each petal will curl right up.

Here I have curled two of the petals.

Here they are all curled.  The longer you leave it over the heat the more it will curl.  If it is not curling, you have the wrong fabric.

Then layer them up and put a stitch through the whole pile.

At this point you could just leave it

Or glue a vintage jewel on top of the stitch

Maybe stitch a button on, like I did on this glove box

Great For
Head bands
As Lapel pins
Hair clips
Clothes
Gift wrap
Purses

It is honestly so easy!
It will take you all of 10 minutes and looks like some high end embellishment.

Happy Creating!
Carol

FANTASTIC! I'm so glad you posted the how-tos. I was one of the ones who asked.

BTW, I thought of you repeatedly this past week. I'm trying to purge out in a garage sale, and I kept finding stuff that someone like you could turn from trash to treasure and wanting to save it yet longer in case I grow a little talent.

Wow, I have seen several different types of tutorials on making flowers and this one is the simpliest and looks so pretty! thank you for another great tutorial Carol!

It's so beautiful Carol. Reminds me of a peony. If only I had some free time to make some (not to mention the space) I burn the ends of the ribbons for my dresses. I always go outside just in case some little piece comes off and lands on the carpet...yikes! I never liked that no frey stuff. Will you and your Mom take to the road this week? Please wish her a happy birthday for me. I sure hope I look as good as my Mom when I am her age. xo

I love this look, but whenever I try I think I am impatient, or maybe have wrong fabric as I burn the edges. They just come out smokey gray. =(

Love it! Tried it. Looks great except that there are teeny tiny singe marks on the edges in different areas. It doesn't look like you have any burn spots. How did you keep that from happening? I am using vintage silky fabric. Maybe that's my problem?? I'm definitely NOT putting it right in the flame-about 2-3 inches above it. Help!!

The Polka Dot Closet said...

Anonymous..I am guessing if you are not holding the fabric to close to the flame that it is the fabric that is causing the burn spots. I have the best luck with cheap 100% polyester lining fabric. The older fabrics are probably 100% silk or some other natural fiber.

Hi Carol! I'm working on projects for my daughters wedding. I want to make a few of these flowers to decorate the ringbearers pillow, flower girls basket etc etc. I tried several different fabrics and the edges are all turing black. I tried to keep the fabric away from the flame but then it doesn't curl. Any idea of what I'm doing wrong? How long do you have to keep it over the heat for it to curl. I was guessing just seconds? Maybe I'm impatient? Not waiting long enough? I've spent 30 minutes on this and it's all a flop. But I'm determined LOL! I will keep trying. maybe I need to buy different fabric. But I do have synthetic. Hummmm maybe it's my candle. Maybe it burns black. And I need a different heat source? Thank you for any suggestions.
