Turning A Shabby French Pink Lamp Shade Into A Hanging Light

The Polka Dot Flea is just days away.  Since I have everything ready for the Flea (It's good to be a little OCD) I thought I would squeak in a last minute project

I was out antique shopping with a friend Sherry@ No Minimalist Here

When I spotted two HUGE vintage lamp shades, they were from the era (40's-50's ?)  when it was in vogue to have massive shades on lamps.

Right away I thought it would make a perfect hanging light

Great floral details on the sides

I bought a ceramic light socket from Home Depot....

......And attached it to an electrical cord  (Just 2 screws attaches the wire to the socket).  If you're interested in the steps to wire a lamp, you can find great step by step instructions on U Tube

Here's my little secret...I never buy the full light wiring kit, I use extension cords I find at garage sales for a .25.   I cut off the the part where you plug in other cords, this leaves me with the plug and wire.....Yep saves a ton of money!

I attached a chain and made the cord cover out of fabric that matched

Since I am selling this at the Polka Dot Flea along with other hanging lights, I needed something to hang them from.......Another project...A lace covered umbrella.

I took the canvas cover off my patio umbrella.....

...Then sewed 3 pieces of lace yardage together, trimmed it with a lace ruffle....

...And used Fabric-Tac to glue on lace runners and doilies

I don't know if you caught that I found 2 pink shades.....One to sell and one for me!

I think it will be a perfect Frenchy Shabby addition to my bedroom!

The Polka Dot Flea is just days away!  I will show you some final preparations in my next post and then....

.......It's "Show time"!!!  I'm experiencing that fine line between excitement and fear!!

I would love for you to visit the Polka Dot Flea website HERE

Happy Creating
Carol

Well, how perfect is that, Carol! The umbrella AND the hanging lamps. I do that with extension cords, too. I cut them off and make really short ones sometimes when I just need a short cord to plug something in.

Those two lamps are going to be gone in NO time! xo Diana xo Diana

I needed some break after the loss of my mother and I couldn't be in front of my computer. After a few days in Venice-Italy, I come back ready to create and to paint again. When I see your always incredible creativity I'm amazed as you usual (you're becoming to be my model)! Do you really sleep sometimes ?

Hi Carol,

LOVE the shade and the lace umbrella.

That lamp is gorgeous with the roses, so unique and romantic and so is your umbrella. Been wanting to redo one of mine for years...Maybe this year will be the year. How did you attach it to the umbrella?

I just happen to have a big old huge vintage lamp shade here (staring up at me) right now. I have some vintage lamps that I want to use here, but I don't like their current look with their current shades. One of them is huge like yours. It is really GOOD QUALITY though so it's nice to have an idea of a better thing to do with it than shooshing it into the attic or something.

I'm sort of wiring lame, though. I will have read and then reread and than google and then watch and goodgle some more when it comes to wiring. Sad to be me.

I'm wondering exactly how you use the extension cord....how do you attach it after cutting part of it off? Any way you can do a tutorial on it? This would save me mucho money!!
