I've been busy finishing DIY Christmas presents.....Next up on the list was painting this sign
I could not believe my luck when I found these four shutters in the neighbors garbage can......Who throws this stuff out????? They are so shabby perfect!
I first printed out the words on my computer....I know...... totally unoriginal wording......
....But since the wood had 2 squares I needed to think of something I could put in the little square.....5 cents was perfect!
I put some old tracing paper under the words...And traced over them with a pen
Then filled in the letters with white paint using a small brush and did the shadowing with a black paint pen.....I have no idea if I got the shadowing right.....But, it gave the letters some dimension
After it dried, I sanded over the letters and then applied some dark wax.....And I was done
I did absolutely nothing else to the wood because it was perfect just as it was
I love it and I still have 3 more shutters...I think one will be perfect for over my kitchen sink
Humm....I wonder who will be getting this one for Christmas?
Happy Creating!

I LOVE this sign! I have got to look around here with an eye to what would make a good sign. I'm sure that some board on the old horse barn or some discarded piece of wood would work, but now you've inspired me! Thanks. Love this.
Oh Carol, your sign is absolutely perfect! I simply love it and find it to be quite charming :)
Thanks for sharing :) Hugs to you!
I think it would be perfect over your window! Those are great shutters, nice find.
Thank you for praying for my sister.
warmly,
deb
I say score!!!! Mary
Your sign looks great, Carol! Such a great and creative idea for a shutter, too. Great find!
GREAT sign! I just love it! I do my "printing" the same way you do-computer and tracing paper. I use one of those mechanical pencils without the lead in it. It gives a nice crisp line and it doesn't cut through my paper. I just did a present for someone and I actually used a Sharpie. It worked great and was easier for me to control than painting. I was desperate because I wanted to get it done and could not find my paint pen.
Hope you have a wonderful day...and THREE more of those to play with? OH MY! Have fun! xo Diana
OMG this is fabulous! As they say ... "one man's junk is another man's treasure"
Carol this is fab/ You could send one of those shutters to Wisconsin. I wish I had half of your imagination. Keep it coming girl!! Yvonne
If I were you I'd be lurking around my neighbor's trash can more often, lol! These are awesome and your sign is simply perfect! Love it! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Inspiration Party.
Thank you for the tutorial. I cannot wait to try something like this myself. Love this and appreciate you and your blog. Blessings
It's truly amazing what "one woman's junk" is "another woman's treasure". It would be mine!!! I love that you didn't have to distress the shutter. Beautiful sign!
I am sure if your neighbors were as crafty as you they would not have thrown them away :). What a fabulous idea. You just take what others think is trash and make it look sensational.
WOW...great find! The sign is just perfect, you did spectacular my dear!!! Neat way to transfer the letters seen this about, giving it a try after the holidays.
Hi Carol, what a great find in the trash. Who does throw these out??
Well someones trash, your treasure and your great find and project.
Love the sign. I have done some this way and it works out great. This has such a wonderful farmhouse feel and love the words you chose too.
You did a fabulous job and to think you have 3 more to work with.
Have fun.
XO
Carol, What an amazing find . . . I'm happy that you found them before the trash-man came. That would have been a same. Well you worked your magic and like the sweet gal that you are, you shared your process. You are the best!
Love you, Connie :)
what great finds! and you knew just what to do with them! love it, carol!!
Oh how I wish we lived closer together you could help me make a sign like that with my old blue boards I got out of a dumster.
You did a fabulous farm house shabby creation LOL with that shutter
This is such a great idea, wonderful way to recycle old and good wood ;-)

Great finds Carol! I also got four shutters from my neighbor's trash. I used two for jewelry display and I still need a use for the other two. Mine were the traditional shutters, though. Yours are pretty neat in that they have the squares versus slats.

These are so clever! You did a beautiful job! Really...who would throw out something that great!? Sheesh! ;) love rosie
The shutters are fabulous with and without words. I love your project, and yes, you must keep one for yourself!
Totally agree, who throws this stuff away but gotta love it when they do!
How fortunate you found and saved these beauties. Love your addition. Merry Merry Bright...
Very cool piece Carol! Nice job my friend. You are a busy bee. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
You make it look so easy! I will have to try this, I was thinking I needed to use Stencils- printing on computer and tracing is perfect!
Thanks so much!
Smiles, Cyndi
Love your sign Carol! Lucky you for finding the shutters, I may have to start crusing your neighborhood, lol.
Hi Carol ! Loe the way you did you decorate your shutters. As usual when you explain something it seems always a child game. And congratulations for the shaddow on the letters : you did them as if the light was coming from the right so perfect perfect job !
