How To Hand Paint A Sign

I've been busy finishing DIY Christmas presents.....Next up on the list was painting this sign

I could not believe my luck when I found these four shutters in the neighbors garbage can......Who throws this stuff out?????  They are so shabby perfect!

I first printed out the words on my computer....I know...... totally unoriginal wording......

....But since the wood had 2 squares I needed to think of something I could put in the little square.....5 cents was perfect!

I put some old tracing paper under the words...And traced over them with a pen

Then filled in the letters with white paint using a small brush and did the shadowing with a black paint pen.....I have no idea if I got the shadowing right.....But, it gave the letters some dimension

After it dried, I sanded over the letters and then applied some dark wax.....And I was done

I did absolutely nothing else to the wood because it was perfect just as it was

I love it and I still have 3 more shutters...I think one will be perfect for over my kitchen sink

Humm....I wonder who will be getting this one for Christmas?

Happy Creating!
Carol

I LOVE this sign! I have got to look around here with an eye to what would make a good sign. I'm sure that some board on the old horse barn or some discarded piece of wood would work, but now you've inspired me! Thanks. Love this.

Your sign looks great, Carol! Such a great and creative idea for a shutter, too. Great find!

GREAT sign! I just love it! I do my "printing" the same way you do-computer and tracing paper. I use one of those mechanical pencils without the lead in it. It gives a nice crisp line and it doesn't cut through my paper. I just did a present for someone and I actually used a Sharpie. It worked great and was easier for me to control than painting. I was desperate because I wanted to get it done and could not find my paint pen.

Hope you have a wonderful day...and THREE more of those to play with? OH MY! Have fun! xo Diana

It's truly amazing what "one woman's junk" is "another woman's treasure". It would be mine!!! I love that you didn't have to distress the shutter. Beautiful sign!

I am sure if your neighbors were as crafty as you they would not have thrown them away :). What a fabulous idea. You just take what others think is trash and make it look sensational.

Carol, What an amazing find . . . I'm happy that you found them before the trash-man came. That would have been a same. Well you worked your magic and like the sweet gal that you are, you shared your process. You are the best!

Great finds Carol! I also got four shutters from my neighbor's trash. I used two for jewelry display and I still need a use for the other two. Mine were the traditional shutters, though. Yours are pretty neat in that they have the squares versus slats.
